The 74HC595 is an 8-bit serial-in, serial or parallel-out shift register with a storage register and 3-state outputs. It is designed for use in a wide range of applications including LED displays, network switches, and power infrastructure. The device operates with a supply voltage range of 2V to 6V and features low power consumption, making it suitable for battery-powered applications.

The 74HC595 shift register accepts serial data and provides a serial output. It also provides parallel data to the 8-bit storage register, which has parallel 3-state outputs. The device includes separate clocks for the shift register and storage register, as well as a direct overriding clear input for the shift register. The high-current 3-state outputs can drive up to 15 LSTTL loads, and the device features low input current and high noise immunity.
