Electronic Product Design Service
Delivery: 2-5 working days
Professional electronic product design and development services
Turning your concept, requirement, or existing hardware into a working, manufacturable electronic product.
What we do
Whether you are starting from a functional idea with no hardware behind it yet, or need an existing product updated, corrected at design level, or brought back into production, we provide circuit design, PCB layout, and embedded firmware development for electronic products and industrial control systems. Every design is developed with manufacture, servicing, and component availability in mind, so what you receive is a product that can be built, tested, and supported rather than a prototype that only works once.
With over thirty years in electronics engineering, the work spans everything from a single sensor board to complete machine control systems and the production test equipment used to verify them.
Services
Circuit design and schematic capture
Complete circuit design developed from a written specification, block diagram, or functional requirement. This includes component selection with availability and product lifecycle taken into account, supporting calculations, and a fully documented schematic suitable for review, manufacture, and future maintenance.
PCB layout and manufacturing output
Single and multilayer PCB layout with attention to thermal performance, signal integrity, electromagnetic behaviour, and mechanical fit within the intended enclosure. Deliverables include Gerber files, drill data, bill of materials, pick-and-place data, and assembly drawings, prepared so that a fabricator or assembly house can quote and build without further clarification.
Embedded firmware development
Firmware written in C and C++ for common microcontroller platforms including STM32, ESP32, RP2040, and AVR. Typical work covers sensor interfacing, motor and actuator control, communication protocols, user interfaces, data logging, and calibration routines. Firmware is written to be readable and maintainable so that it remains serviceable beyond the original engagement.
Wireless and connectivity integration
Integration of Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi, cellular, and wired serial communication into products. We work with pre-certified radio modules rather than discrete radio design, which keeps products out of the separate radio type-approval process and significantly reduces both cost and time to market.
Legacy equipment retrofit and control system replacement
Industrial machinery frequently outlives the controller that runs it. Where a PLC, HMI, or proprietary control board has failed and is no longer available, we design a modern replacement that drives the existing motors, drives, sensors, and actuators. This restores machines that would otherwise be scrapped, usually at a fraction of the cost of replacing the equipment.
Component obsolescence and design refresh
Where a product can no longer be built because a key component has gone end-of-life, we redesign the affected section around a currently available equivalent while preserving form, fit, and function. This service is intended for products that are still selling and need to stay in production rather than be redeveloped from scratch.
Production test equipment and test jigs
Design and construction of functional test fixtures and automated test equipment for production environments. This covers bed-of-nails and connector-based fixtures, automated pass and fail testing, measurement logging, and operator interfaces designed for use by production staff rather than engineers. Test equipment can be developed alongside a new product or built for an existing product already in manufacture.
Prototype assembly and bring-up
Assembly of first-article prototypes, initial power-up, and component-level fault finding using oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and bench instrumentation. Where a client has an existing board that does not work as intended, we can diagnose the fault at circuit level and specify the correction.
Enclosure and mechanical integration
Electronic designs are developed with the physical product in mind, including board outline, connector placement, mounting, and access. Where a matching enclosure is required, this can be designed as part of the same engagement under our CAD design service, so that the board and the housing are developed together rather than one being forced to fit the other.
Design for manufacture and production support
Preparation of a design for volume production, including panelisation, test point provision, programming and serialisation at point of manufacture, and a complete documentation pack. The intention is that a third-party assembler can build the product repeatably without needing to consult the designer.
Prototype manufacturing management
Once a design is complete, we can manage the process of having physical hardware produced. This includes preparing and submitting files to PCB fabricators and assembly houses, sourcing components, reviewing quotes, and coordinating delivery. This service is available as an add-on to any design engagement and is intended to reduce the administrative burden on clients who do not have established manufacturing contacts or wish to streamline the path from design to physical hardware.
How a project works
- Enquiry - The client provides a functional description, any existing hardware or files, power and environmental requirements, quantities, and intended use.
- Scope review - We review the brief, confirm whether the project falls within our accepted scope, and clarify any outstanding technical details.
- Quote - A project quote is provided based on complexity, deliverable format, and any manufacturing management requirements.
- Design - Circuit design, PCB layout, and firmware development are carried out to the agreed specification.
- Prototype and test - A first article is built and brought up, and the design is verified against the agreed requirements.
- Review - Test results and draft files are shared with the client for review and feedback.
- Delivery - Final files, documentation, and any physical hardware are delivered upon project completion.
Project scope and limitations
Being clear about what we do and do not take on helps ensure that every project we accept receives our full attention and produces a useful result.
Work we accept
- Low-voltage electronic products, embedded control systems, instrumentation, and industrial control retrofits
- Battery, mains-adapter, and industrial-supply powered products where the control electronics operate at safe extra-low voltage
- Production test equipment and test fixtures for new or existing products
- Projects where the client can describe the functional requirement, even if the technical implementation is not yet defined
- Modifications and design refreshes where the client owns the original work or holds the rights to modify it
Work we do not accept
- Safety-critical applications, including medical devices, automotive safety systems, aerospace, and any product requiring formal functional-safety certification
- Custom radio frequency and antenna design, or products requiring independent radio type approval. We integrate pre-certified modules instead
- High-speed digital design such as DDR memory interfaces and gigabit signalling
- Designs where third-party safety or compliance certification forms part of the deliverable. Designs can be prepared with compliance in mind, but certification itself is carried out by an accredited test house
- Repair of individual consumer items. This is a design service rather than a repair service
- Reproducing, reverse-engineering, or modifying an existing product unless the client can confirm ownership or the legal right to modify that design
Intellectual property requirement
All modification, refresh, and retrofit work is carried out on the understanding that the client either owns the original design or holds documented rights to modify it. We do not reproduce proprietary designs, copy competitor products, clone existing circuit boards, or extract firmware from devices where ownership cannot be established. Clients are responsible for confirming their rights before submitting hardware, files, or reference samples.
Confidentiality and non-disclosure
Every client's information, designs, and ideas are treated as confidential. This applies to concepts discussed at enquiry stage as well as to work carried out under a formal engagement, and it applies whether or not a document has been signed. Confidentiality is a standing obligation under the ethical conduct rules of the engineering profession, not something a client should have to negotiate for.
We will sign a mutual non-disclosure agreement where a client's internal process requires one. We do not sign agreements that contain restraint of trade clauses. As an engineering practice serving multiple clients across overlapping industries, we cannot accept terms that restrict the fields, technologies, or markets in which we are able to work. An agreement that protects your information is acceptable; one that restricts our ability to practise is not.
Get a quote
To receive a quote, send us your project details including:
- A functional description of what the product needs to do
- Any existing schematics, source code, or hardware, if the work is a modification or retrofit
- Power source and supply voltage
- Operating environment, including temperature, moisture, dust, or vibration exposure
- Any connectivity requirement, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular, or wired communication
- Enclosure, size, or mounting constraints
- Quantities required for prototype and for production
- Target cost per unit, if the product is intended for volume manufacture
- Required timeline or deadline
- Any compliance or certification requirements the product must eventually meet
The more detail you can provide at the outset, the more accurately we can scope the work and provide a meaningful quote. We are happy to review a preliminary concept and advise on the best way to proceed before a formal brief is submitted.
